Matt and Angel met during orientation at college. It was their first meal at Saga (the cafeteria) after everyone’s families had left but before the upperclassmen arrived. Angel was sitting by herself at the only open table she could find (a big round one near where the football players sit, unknown to her at the time), and Matt came up and asked if he could sit there. Angel didn’t yet realize that freshmen break all social conventions during orientation week and sit wherever they can find a seat, even if they don’t know the person. So she said, “Yes” out of politeness, but thought Matt was pretty weird and forward for asking to sit with her when they had never met before. Through the course of the breakfast, Angel agreed to loan Matt a graphing calculator for the quantitative skills exam, and the rest is history.

Well, not really.

For the next two years, Angel and Matt had some mutual friends and were acquaintances, but didn’t really know each other well until studying abroad in China.

Sometime during sophomore year, when the girls on Angel’s floor were facetiously joking about finding husbands, Angel’s floormate, Karen, said to her, “Hey, I know who you can marry – Matt Lee!”

Angel vehemently responded, “No! I could never marry Matt Lee! He’s a liberal!!”

The following year, Angel and Matt both studied at Xiamen University in China. During their time in China, they had many long conversations, and they realized that they were both more moderate and had a lot more in common than they realized. And from there, the rest is actually history.
